The caffeine experiment
Caffeine is one of the most common palpitation triggers. This guided experiment helps you find out whether it affects you. Tap each phase to learn more.
Days 1–2: Withdrawal
What to do: Stop all caffeine — coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks, and dark chocolate.
What to expect: Headache, tiredness, and irritability are common. These are signs your body was dependent on caffeine and usually peak on day 2.
Note: If you currently drink more than 4 cups per day, consider reducing gradually over 2–3 days rather than stopping abruptly, to minimise withdrawal headaches.
Tip: Drink plenty of water and allow yourself an early night. The discomfort is temporary.
Days 3–5: Observation
What to do: Continue caffeine-free. Record your Kardia each morning and note any palpitations in your diary.
What to expect: Withdrawal symptoms should ease. Pay attention to whether palpitations change in frequency or intensity.
Tip: Do not change anything else this week — keep exercise, sleep, and meals the same so you can isolate the caffeine variable.
Day 6: Reintroduction
What to do: Have one cup of your usual caffeinated drink in the morning. Take a Kardia recording before and one hour after.
What to expect: If caffeine is a trigger, you may notice palpitations return within 30–90 minutes. If nothing happens, caffeine may not be a significant trigger for you.
Tip: Record the exact drink, time, and any symptoms. This is your personal evidence.
Days 7–14: Decision
If caffeine triggered symptoms: You now have a clear, personal reason to reduce or eliminate it. Many people find they can tolerate small amounts — experiment to find your threshold.
If caffeine made no difference: Good news — you can keep enjoying it. Focus your energy on other potential triggers from your diary.
Tip: Bring your findings to your results appointment. This kind of personal evidence is invaluable.
